Office of the Vice Provost for Research, Padma Raghavan
Vanderbilt faculty are recognized for path-breaking discoveries, scholarship, and leadership in higher education. I work collaboratively with university leadership and faculty to promote Vanderbilt’s distinctive research culture, which aspires to improve the human condition.
The role of my office has been expanded from its past definition based on faculty feedback. In addition to overseeing the university’s research portfolio, I also oversee implementation of the university’s new future vision and trans-institutional strategies and work closely with Provost Wente, the academic Deans, the Vice Provosts, and the faculty at large to advance the quality of the research and scholarship university-wide. Our plans include developing strategies to enhance extramural support for research and advanced studies from all sources– corporate, foundation, federal, and philanthropic, advancing a cohesive and vibrant international research agenda, and seeking key partnerships around shared priorities in research. I work with the inaugural Vanderbilt University Research Council in my advocacy for the research and scholarship missions of all disciplines at Vanderbilt.
Vanderbilt is a preeminent global research university, and I welcome you to seek out our researchers for collaborations that can address the challenges facing science and society.

Special Projects Manager
David Spielman assists the Vice Provost for Research with special projects, including strategic planning, office and organizational development, and strategic communications with Vanderbilt faculty. He currently oversees the limited submission process for Vanderbilt University and coordinates with Corporate and Foundation Relations and the Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Office of Research in this role.
Prior to joining Vanderbilt in March of 2016, David directed communications for the Institute for CyberScience at Penn State University, where he earned his Ph.D. in English. His research focused on interpreting the thousands of sums of money presented in eighteenth-century English novels by calculating present-day buying power and examining historical sums in their original context. He designed and taught the course on writing for publication for incoming graduate students in the Chemistry department in addition to teaching courses for the English department for ten years on literature and writing to students of all levels across the university.
